The Friends of the Quitman Public Library will hold its Annual Bake Sale on Saturday, October 8th beginning at 9:00 a.m. in front of Brookshire’s - Quitman. The Annual FOL Book Sale is scheduled to run October 11 - 14, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. If you have donations to offer for this sale, please contact the library during business hours for drop-off information. The Friends is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth, enhancement and improvement of the library and its services to the community.
To help people navigate the Web to find accurate health information, Quitman Public Library, ETMC-Quitman, and UT Southwestern Medical Center Library are hosting a Consumer Heath Information Workshop on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. to be held in the Thurman Shamburger Conference Room at the Quitman Public Library. John Fullinwider, Director of Research Support at UT Southwestern and Medical Librarian at Baylor Health Sciences Library, will lead this workshop. The public is welcome to attend this free interactive workshop and learn how to find health information you can trust.

Advisory Board
The Quitman Public Library Advisory Board will meet again Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the library’s main gallery. The public is always welcome to attend advisory board meetings.

Genealogy
The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will meet Monday, October 17, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library.

October is National Information Literacy Awareness Month

The National Forum on Information Literacy (NFIL) was created in 1989 as a response to the recommendations of the American Library Association’s Presidential Committee on Information Literacy. Today, the National Forum on Information Literacy is a robust collaborative of over 93 national and international organizations working together, on various levels, to mainstream this critical, 21st century educational and workforce development concept throughout every segment of society.

More people than ever are seeking healthcare information on the Internet, however not all websites are trustworthy. To help people navigate the Web to find accurate health information, Quitman Public Library, ETMC-Quitman, and UT Southwestern Medical Center Library are hosting a Consumer Heath Information Workshop on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. to be held in the Thurman Shamburger Conference Room at the Quitman Public Library. John Fullinwider, Director of Research Support at UT Southwestern and Medical Librarian at Baylor Health Sciences Library, will lead this workshop. The public is invited to attend this interactive, hands-on workshop and learn how to find health information you can trust. For professionals needing Continuing Education Units (CEUs), this workshop will count for 3.
One can find a wealth of research materials and public information at the Quitman Public Library. Library cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17. Regular library hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

In the library’s lobby showcase is a patriotic display to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Among the interesting items is an exact scale model of the Twin Towers. Also on display is a reproduction of the Constitution of the United States in recognition of Constitution Week (September 17-23, 2011).
One can find a wealth of entertaining reading, research materials, and public information at the Quitman Public Library. Patron cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17. Regular library hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Quitman Public Library invite the public to join them for the noon hour at the first meeting of the 2012 season on September 13, 2011 in the Thurman Shamburger Community Room. Special musical entertainment is scheduled and light refreshments will be served.
The following officers will serve for 2012: Teresa Meeks - President, Tony Ragsdale - Vice President and Program Chair, Diane Moseley - Secretary, Helen Heavey - Treasurer, Jean Fox - Hospitality Chair.
The Friends is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth, enhancement and improvement of the library and its services to the community.

Genealogy
The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will meet Monday, September 19, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community room. The Wood County Genealogical Society has a microfilm reader/printer for those who wish to browse the library’s collection of Wood County Democrat newspapers dating from 1917.
