  July is National Anti-boredom month and the library is showcasing some great summer reads and movies to aid in the fight against boredom.  You can find this collection displayed near the front check-out area. Also, we have added loads of new audiobooks, eBooks and movies on Quitman Public Library’s OverDrive platform for access on your reading devices. To access OverDrive, just sign in, select this library, and enter your library card number and password we have on file for you by going to https://netldc.overdrive.com.      
  Special thanks extend to Peoples Wireless, Subway – Quitman, Friends of the Library, Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis, Glowing Hearts Ministries, City of Quitman, and the staff and volunteers of Quitman Public Library for making this year’s “Build a Better World” Summer Reading 2017 program great for our community’s youngest readers!
  The 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam at the Quitman Public Library is Friday, July 14, 2017.   Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in from 6 – 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. There will be an open mic set-up for those who wish to perform. Listeners are always welcome.

Adult Services
  GED preparatory classes will extend through the summer. The class meets each Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m. and is taught by certified instructor, Susan Resnik. The class is designed to prepare students for the GED test. Call 903-763-4191 or stop by on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. to meet with the instructor. There is no cost for the class, but the GED workbook is $15.
  Rebekah Yeager and Virginia Hoffpauir invite students of all ages and skill levels to bring their own supplies and join the group for free knitting and crochet instruction each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery.

Friends of the Library
  Friends of the Quitman Public Library recently held its last meeting of the season and will meet again in September 2017 after Summer Break. Officers for 2017-2018 are Cathy Dye – President, Beverly Chamberlain – Vice President, Lillian Gray – Secretary, Rebekah Yeager – Treasurer, and Diane Moseley – Hospitality.
  Friends is an active group of men and women dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

On Display
  In the lobby showcase, during the month of July, is a selection of hand-crafted needlework items from the collections of several local crafters. Among the interesting items is an award-winning quilt designed and hand-stitched by Virginia Hoffpauir.

   Summer Reading “Build a Better World” activity is Thursday, June 8, 2017 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library. It’s “Tinker Day” where we will build stuff with the help of teen volunteers from Glowing Hearts of Grand Prairie, Texas. On Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 2 p.m., summer readers will meet at Gov. Jim Hogg City Park where Glowing Hearts volunteers will help us “Build a Better Thing-a-ma-jig.” In the event of rain, summer reading will meet at the library. Special thanks to the Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis, Subway – Quitman, and Peoples Wireless for sponsoring this year’s program.
