Quitman Public Library will be celebrating Women’s History Month in March 2025 with displays throughout the library highlighting notable women throughout history who have made their mark in the world. There will be special displays in the main gallery as well as the children’s department.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library meet on 2nd Thursdays at noon. The next one-hour meeting will be March 13, 2025, with Susan Lomanto providing special St. Patrick’s Day treats. Among the topics of discussion will be the FOL Spring Book Sale planned for April 29 – May 2, 2025. The public is invited to join this active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the Quitman Public Library.

“Story Time with Spencer” happens every 2nd and 4th Friday at 1 p.m. in the children’s section. On Friday, Feb. 28, Spencer will have a special program with stickers for the kids. Story time is designed for toddlers through six years of age, and parents need to stay with their children.

Board Games for Teens group will meet Friday, March 7, 2025, from 1 – 4 p.m. in the library’s community room. Bring a couple of board games that your teens enjoy and bring along snacks and drinks to share. This group is organized by Homeschoolers – Wood County, Texas and is designed for teens only (ages 13 – 19).

The Wood County TX Genealogical Society invites family researchers and historians to meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community Room. Wood County Metal Detecting Club is all about metal detecting and historical research here in Wood and surrounding counties. If you are interested in digging in the dirt and finding things, and participating in on-site special digs, join in the meeting on 1st Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library.

Knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main lobby. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction. Bring your patterns to swap with others.

Adult GED support services are available for students who have registered online at www.ged.com. Certified teachers are available to help with reading/writing skills and math on Wednesdays during library hours.

Online services are available by visiting our website at www.quitmanlibrary.org to find the TexShare® database of reference resources and Libby® and Boundless® for the latest eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming video. Library cards are available at no cost for those who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5 – 17. Mineola TX Mayor Guest Speaker at Wood County Genealogical Society Meeting

 
The Wood County Genealogical Society will meet Monday, February 17, 2025 at 5:00 p.m., at the Quitman Public Library, 202 East Goode Street, Quitman TX. 

Jayne Lankford, Mayor of the City of Mineola, will be the guest speaker for the evening, sharing the history of the Lankford family. She is a long-time resident of Mineola, volunteering her time for years at the Mineola Youth Foundation as board member, coach, umpire, grounds, concessions and anything else needing help. 

Lankford became one of the first female High School Baseball Umpires in Texas. Later concentrating on softball, She was elected the first female President of UIL Tyler Softball Association. She retired from officiating professionally after achieving the national level. 

Lankford’s next interest began with bicycling. She traveled to different cities and rode in their sponsored events including the “Hotter ’n Hell” in Wichita Falls which she calls her greatest bicycling achievement, riding 100 miles in August. 

She also trained for Triathlons - swimming, biking, and running - finishing all that she participated in. Lankford has also served on the Mineola City Council and is currently serving a second term as mayor; however, Jayne admits raising three boys and participating in their activities has been her greatest pleasure. 

The speaking event is open to the community.

Quitman, TX – The Quitman Public Library in Quitman, Texas, has received the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA), an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League in Austin. This honor has been presented to Quitman Public Library Director, Delene Allen, by Cynthia Pfledderer, President of the TMLDA.

“The library was presented this award in 2017, 2020, and 2022. On behalf of my library staff and the community served by this library, it is a great honor to be a 4-time recipient of this distinguished award for 2024” says Allen.

To successfully receive the Achievement of Library Excellence Award, a library must exhibit excellence in ten areas: providing services to underserved populations, marketing, community collaboration, service enhancement, literacy support, digital inclusion, workforce development, distinct initiatives, and providing cultural, topical, and educational programming.

Of the 542 public libraries in Texas, only 102 received this award, placing Quitman Public Library in the top 19% of all public libraries in the state.
