Join us Friday, December 20, 2013 for “An Acoustical Christmas Night” Concert with Shea Birdwell and Rafael Espinoza live at the Shamburger Room inside the Quitman Public Library.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 7 p.m.  There will be a $5 charge at the door with proceeds benefitting Quitman Christmas Sharing.  Rafael Espinoza released his second CD “Brighter Day” earlier this month, and he recently was winner of the ABS Heart of Blues Challenge in Austin TX.

The library is hosting “Grant Writing as a Process” sponsored by Southside Bank and presented by A Circle of Ten, Inc. – Network for Collaboration this Wednesday, December 18, 2013.  A free 1-hour information session begins at noon, and then the workshop will be from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.  Participants will gain a better understanding of grass-roots community organizing, types of grants, and how community and program development relates to grant writing. The Quitman Public Library is one of the city’s warmest gathering places during the holidays.  From now until Christmas, stop by and have a cup of warm spiced cider while you browse our nearly 30,000 items available for check out.  Near the front desk is a seasonal display filled with media pertaining to holiday decorating, entertaining, crafts, recipes, and Christmas movies for all ages.  
In observance of the Christmas Holiday, the library will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, December 25-26th, 2013.  Normal business hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m Call 903-763-4191 for more information, and please visit our website at www.quitmanlibrary.org.

Adult Services
Class is in session each Thursday for GED preparation from 10 a.m. – noon and English as a Second Language (ESL) from 4 – 6 p.m. in the library’s conference room.  These classes run concurrently with the Q.I.S.D. holiday schedule.  ESL and GED classes are taught by certified instructor, Sandra Grider. To sign up for either class, just stop by during class hours.
Knitting instructor, Virginia Hoffpauir, invites knitters of all ages and skill levels to bring their own supplies and join the group for free knitting and crochet instruction.  The class meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery.

Young Adult and Children’s Services
Join us for Story Time at the Quitman Public Library, 202 East Goode Street, Quitman TX each Friday from 11 a.m. - noon for an hour of story time activities.  Elizabeth Soutendijk, who works with Gateway to Libraries - Reading Literacy, has designed a wonderful thematic program that teaches as well as entertains. The program is designed for young readers and home-schooled students; however anyone who wants to hear a great story is welcome.  For more information, call 903-763-BOOK.

            The Friends of the Library invite the public to the next meeting on January 14, 2014 at noon in the Shamburger Community Room.  Special guest will be Boyd Sanders from the Tyler State Park.

             The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will meet Monday, January 20, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community Room. Jerry Yost, author of The Great Arctic Adventure: An Elf’s Christmas Tale and Rune will be meeting patrons in the lobby of the Quitman Public Library on Friday, December 13th, from 10 a.m. until noon.  Jerry retired from the Texas House of Representatives after serving twelve years, and also published a paper on corporate lobbying that earned him a Chair in the Texas Law Library at the University of Texas. He is now fulfilling a lifelong dream of writing novels for young adults.
The Quitman Public Library is one of the city’s warmest gathering places during the holidays.  From now until Christmas, stop by and have a cup of warm spiced cider while you browse our nearly 30,000 items available for check out.  The library has all of the local and regional newspapers as well as popular monthly and weekly magazines, so stop by and see what your local public library has to offer. Near the front desk is a seasonal display filled with media pertaining to holiday decorating, entertaining, crafts, recipes, and Christmas movies for all ages.  
Friday Night Bluegrass Jam Fever is always on the second Friday of the month in the library’s community room.  The next acoustical jam is Friday, December 13, 6 - 9 p.m.  Come early to tune up.  Acoustic musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome.  Refreshments will be available. Author, Jerry Yost at QPL this Friday

Jerry Yost, author of The Great Arctic Adventure: An Elf’s Christmas Tale and Rune will be meeting patrons in the lobby of the Quitman Public Library on Friday, December 13th, from 10 a.m. until noon.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library Newsletter - December 2013



 I am excited to announce that the Quitman Public Library is finally getting our new roof installed! Construction is scheduled to begin Wednesday, December 18, 2013, and this should be a 6-week project according to the contractors at  Castro Roofing.  We will also be replacing our old HVAC units with new ones, at a discount, courtesy of Ray Robert’s Service in Quitman. Parking will likely be a problem for a few weeks, but it will be worth it.  If you have any questions or concerns about the project, feel free to stop by or call me at 903-763-4191.
Everyone’s talking about OverDrive®, and here’s why: If you have a Quitman Public Library card, you can now check out up to 5 of the newest eBooks for 2 weeks to read on your computer, download to your smart phone, and download to your reading device such as the Nook® or Kindle®. 
To make it easy to understand, OverDrive® is the platform that stores eBooks.  The Northeast Texas Digital Consortium is a group of libraries that join our resources and finances to purchase and share eBooks with each other.  The Quitman Public Library now subscribes to be part of this consortium.
