This week includes the first day of summer, and the Quitman Public Library is one of the coolest spots in the city to take a break. Stop by the library and read the newspaper, enjoy a magazine, check your email, find a book on your favorite subject, or visit with friends. A display of media filled with light summer reading and ideas for summer travel, picnics, sports, and family activities is located near the front check-out area.
Mark your calendars for Friday, July 1st for the Summer Reading Kick-off Party at the library. This summer’s reading program is “Dig up a Good Book @ the Quitman Public Library.” Sign-up ends June 30th, and the program runs through July 29th, 2011. Library cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17. Genealogy
“The Genealogy Guys” will be at the library on Friday, August 5, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. for a workshop hosted by the Wood County TX Genealogical Society.
“The Genealogy Guys” are George G. Morgan, internationally-recognized genealogy expert, author, and lecturer and Drew Smith, MLS, instructor at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Their podcast is heard by millions on Ancestry.com each week.
The Society will remain active throughout the summer with “How-To” classes covering basic computer use and beginning genealogy research. Current events are posted on the website at http://www.woodtxgene.com.

The Quitman Public Library Advisory Board will meet Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the library’s main gallery. The public is always welcome to attend advisory board meetings.

Summer Reading Entertainment Schedule
Come join us at the Quitman Public Library for our Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Dig up a Good Book”.
We will give out cool prizes and have an over all good time while enjoying
some good books. Come to the library and pick up a Summer Reading Registration Sheet, or download and print a Summer Reading Registration Sheet @ www.quitmanlibrary.org.
July 1st Summer Kick-Off Party on Bermuda St. between Potts Feed and the Quitman Public Library. We will have lots of fun learning about dirt and we’ll have a hotdog lunch. 11am-Noon
July 8th Geologist Marsha Layton from TJC will be doing a presentation about geology; she will bring different samples to check out. Afterwards we will make our own pet rocks. 11am-Noon
July 15th On your marks, Get set, GO! Worm races at Jim Hogg Park. It will be lots of fun, smiles, prizes, and a good time for all. 11am-Noon
July 22nd Let’s plant something together; The Garden Club will partner with us and we will create our very own plants. Let’s learn a little bit about the gardening world together. 11am-Noon
July 29th Movies Night (day) at the library; come join us for a movie and a fun time with popcorn, drinks, and smiling faces. Come in your pj’s. It will be b.y.o.p (bring your own pillow). 1pm-End of movie

The Council chooses to meet at the Quitman Public Library because of the meeting room accommodations and because of the city’s centralized location within the region.

In Honor of SGT. Joshua Powell
The Quitman Public Library will open its lobby and community room Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. for those who wish to wait for the funeral procession of SGT. Joshua Powell of Quitman TX. The route of the vehicle carrying SGT. Powell will be North on Hwy 69 from Tyler to HWY 37 into Quitman. May God rest his soul as we honor our fallen hero. --Delene H. Allen, Library Director
