   Across the country, gardeners will celebrate April as National Gardening Month!  On display this month is a collection of books -- ranging from novice to expert -- to help you grow your best garden ever!  Many of the books were selected by the Quitman Garden Club and purchased with funds donated by club members. Stop in and check the display.   

  The 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam at the Quitman Public Library is Friday, April 14, 2017.   Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in from 6 - 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. There will be an open mic set-up for those who wish to perform. Listeners are always welcome.

Adult Services

  GED preparatory classes meet each Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m. to help you prepare for the test. 

The class is taught by certified instructor, Susan Resnik. 

  Instructors Rebekah Yeager and Virginia Hoffpauir invite students of all ages and skill levels to bring their own supplies and join the group for free knitting and crochet instruction each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery. If you have a pattern to share, please bring it. 

Children’s Services

  On Thursday, March 30 at 2 p.m., Story Time is “All About Service Dogs,” and we will be reading books to service dogs from K-9 Comforters. Upcoming Story Time calendar: April 6 – meet at Gov. Jim Hogg City Park because it’s “All About Playing!” We will play Red Rover, Red light – Green light and Freeze Tag. Also we will be making bird feeders with bird seed and peanut butter. If you have a peanut allergy, soy nut butter will be available. April 13 – “All About Loving Your Library” to celebrate National Library Week!

  Story Time is designed for young readers and home-schooled students, but anyone who wants to hear a great story is welcome. Special thanks to Peoples Telephone – Quitman TX for sponsoring this year’s crafts and activities.

Friends of the Library

  Friends of the Quitman Public Library meet Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at noon in the Shamburger Community Room. The Friends invite everyone to join them for an hour of friendship. The short meeting will include a “5-Minute No Spoiler Book Review,” a short presentation of “What You May Not Know about Me” from one of the members. Special guest will be card mechanic, Earl O’Neal, who will April Fool us with slight-of-hand card tricks.

  Also, it’s Pot Luck in May! Spend your lunch hour among Friends on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at noon in the Shamburger Community Room.

  Friends is an active group of men and women dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

What Can Obituary Records Tell a Genealogy Researcher?

  Obituaries have the unique power to both tell a story and enable individuals to learn more about their family relationships. A well-written obituary contains a wealth of information including facts and details that help capture the legacy of people who have passed on. Facts that memorialize the lives of ancestors will usually have the following facts:

• ·         Legal name(s) and nick-names
• ·         Age, birthdate, birthplace and current residence
• ·         Death location and death date
• ·         Education, profession, career
• ·         Military service and distinctions
• ·         Names of parents, siblings, spouse, children
• ·         Personal anecdotes

  The average obituary contains the names of about ten family members of the deceased—parents, spouse, children, and other relatives such as aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and inlaws.

  Some obituaries include much more if you read with a keen eye. For example, the cause of death may not be listed, but memorial donations may be requested for such organizations as the American Heart Association or Susan G. Comen Society which may provide a reasonable indication.

  Another not so obvious clues may hint at hobbies or interests of the deceased when there is a request for memorial donations to a particular library, museum, school, or cause such as the ASPCA. Also, a church affiliation may be presumed by noting where the service is held and who is listed as the officiating minister.

  There are national and international online obituaries that can be found at sites like GenealogyBank, FamilySearch and Newspaper Archive.

  The Wood County TX Genealogical Society has alphabetical volumes of obituaries that have been clipped, pasted and cataloged by volunteers (prior to the digital age), and these volumes are housed at the Quitman Public Library – Quitman TX.  Also, there are reels of microfilm of the Wood County Democrat that contain obituary records from 1914 – 2008 that may be viewed at the Quitman Public Library.

   Now is the time to get your garden in shape for spring and summer blooms, and the Quitman Public Library has information you need to get ready. Near the front desk is a seasonal display of books, selected by the Quitman Garden Club, with tips for planting, gardening, food preservation and processing. The Quitman Garden Club invites interested gardeners to join members at the library on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. Also, special thanks go to Beverly Chamberlain for donating a 2-year subscription to Birds & Blooms.

  The Quitman Public Library will not host the AARP Tax Assistance program this year. To locate the nearest free AARP preparation site, call 1-888-227-7669. Public computers are available at the library for filing online during regular business hours, and Wi-Fi is available 24/7.

Adult Services

  During March, the General Educational Development (GED) preparatory class will only meet on March 2 and March 23. Due to Spring Break, class will not meet on March 9 and March 16 due to Spring Break. Class time is 4 – 6 p.m. and is taught by certified instructor, Susan Resnik. 

  Knitting and crochet instruction class will continue through Spring Break. Instructor, Virginia Hoffpauir, welcomes all ages and skill levels each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery.

Children’s Services

  The Story Time Gang meets each Thursday at 2 p.m. Lillian Gray plans an educational hour filled with stories, crafts and plenty of fun. Upcoming themes are: March 2 “All About Line Dancing!” – March 9 “All About Ezra Jack Keats,” and we will make comic book place mats. There will be no Story Time on March 16 due to Spring Break.

            The Quitman Public Library Advisory Board will meet Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 6 p.m. in the Shamburger Community Room. Among the items on the agenda will be updating library policy.  The public is always welcome to attend advisory board meetings.
