Library Notes by Delene H. Allen

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month -- a time when libraries across the country remind parents that the most important learning tool is a library card.  Patron cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification.  A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17. 
This month also marks the 11th Anniversary of 9/11, and the library is honoring this tragic event with a display available for check out near the front desk. 
Friday Night Bluegrass Jam Fever is always on the second Friday of the month at the Quitman Public Library hosted by Eugene Allen.  The next acoustical jam is Friday, September 14, 6 - 9 p.m.  Come early to tune up.  Acoustic musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome.  Refreshments will be available. Adult Services
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes will resume September 13, 2012.  The regular class schedule is Thursdays 10 a.m. – noon and 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. and will run concurrently with the Q.I.S.D. holiday schedule.  Classes are taught by Sandra Grider, Certified Instructor.
Each Thursday, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., knitting instruction is offered by Virginia Hoffpauir in the library’s main gallery.  Bring your own supplies and join the group for a relaxing and fun time of free instruction. 

Friends of the Library
QPL Library Friends is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.  The public is invited to join The Friends for regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at noon in the library’s Shamburger Community Room. 
The following officers have been elected to serve for 2012-13:  Teresa Meeks - President, Tony Ragsdale - Vice President and Program Chair, Diane Moseley - Secretary, Annette Wilbourn - Treasurer, Jean Fox - Hospitality Chair, and Judith Sanders – Communications Chair. 

Genealogy
             The Wood County Texas Genealogical Society was organized in 1983 to provide for the common interest of ancestral research. Genealogy volunteers are available at the library or by appointment to aid researchers with family history.  The society holds regular meetings on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library, and the public is always welcome.
The Wood County Texas Genealogical Society has elected the following officers for 2012-13:   Ronnie Vance - President, Deason Hunt - Vice President, Shirley Patrick - Secretary, Wayne McCluney - Treasurer.
On Monday, September 17, 2012, club members will gather for a pre-meeting social at one of the area restaurants, and the public is invited to join them. Updated information can always be found at http://www.woodtxgene.com or by calling 903-763-4191.
