July is
National Anti-boredom month, and what better place to combat boredom than at
your local library? In addition to being
a comfortable, quiet place to read and study, the library is brimming with
benefits. The Quitman Public Library
carries nearly 30,000 items like these: bestsellers, series books, audio books,
reference materials, genealogical resources, biographies, movies, magazines,
regional daily and weekly newspapers, trade journals, encyclopedic databases,
and much more including access to nearly 27,000 full-text books online in .pdf
format. Patrons also have access to high-speed
wireless Internet. The library’s
knowledgeable staff is always ready to connect you with the information you
need.
Friday Night Bluegrass Jam Fever is
always on the second Friday of the month at the Quitman Public Library. The next acoustical jam is Friday, July 12, 6
- 9 p.m. Come early to tune up. Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical
levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome. Refreshments will be available. For more

Everyone who lives,
works, attends school or owns property or a business in Wood County is entitled
to a free library card at the Quitman Public Library. Borrowing privileges are available to those
who can provide photo identification and proof of residency, taxpayer status,
school enrollment, or proof of employment in Wood County. A guardian must sign for children ages
5-17. Library hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6

The library appreciates businesses
and individuals in our community who offer their time and services in support
of their local library. Special thanks to Quitman Garden Club for maintaining
the library’s patio areas, Hog Computer for keeping our computers up to speed,
McCluney Pest Control for keeping the library pest free, SuddenLink for
providing television cable service for the Thurman Shamburger Community Room, and
Ray Roberts Service of Quitman for providing routine inspections of the
library’s heat and cooling system.
Adult Services
GED classes conclude for the summer on
Wednesday, July 31, 2013. To learn more
about GED and ESL classes or to sign up for Fall classes, call the
library.
Knitting and crochet instructor,
Virginia Hoffpauir, invites everyone to bring their own supplies and join her
group for a fun time of free instruction.
Stop by the library’s main gallery each Thursday, 2 – 4 p.m.
Young Adult and
Children’s Services
Summer Reading Month has ended at the
Quitman Public Library! Summer readers got their game on by playing classic
board games in the Thurman Shamburger Community Room, learning outdoor games of
yesteryear at Gov. Jim Hogg Park, and by playing swimming pool games at Quitman
City Pool. The program ended with
popcorn and a movie sponsored by ETMC-Quitman.

Advisory Board
The Quitman Public Library Advisory
Board will meet Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 6 p.m. in the library’s main gallery. Among the items on the agenda will be
recommendations for policy revision. The public is always welcome to attend
advisory board meetings.
Friends of the
Library
The Friends of the Library are accepting donations of books of all
types in preparation for the Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale scheduled
for October 2013. In addition to books,
the Friends will accept movies, magazines, video games, board games and jigsaw
puzzles. Call 903-763-4191 for drop-off
information. Friends of the
Library is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and
improvement of the library. For more

Genealogy
During
the week of the Old Settler’s Reunion - August 2013, the Wood County
Genealogical Society invites visitors to the library’s genealogy department to
view family files and records of early settlers of Wood County. We offer Wi-Fi,
and you may research online genealogical records using Ancestry.com Library
Edition, Heritage Quest, Newspaperarchive.com, Geni, and digitized images from
our database. Also available is a
microfilm reader/printer for viewing the Wood County Democrat (1914-2011). The library has several copies of Wood
County 1850-1900 available for $15.00 each.

Memorials and
Donations
During the month of June, the Quitman
Public Library received the following gift: Carolyn R. and John R. Landers gave
a donation in memory of Larry Robertson, former Mayor of Quitman.
