February 2014 FOL Newsletter

February 2014 - Quitman Public Library News

Spend your lunch hour with the Friends of the Quitman Public Library at noon on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Special guest will be Linda Kunze, Educational Curator with the Tyler Caldwell Zoo. There will be light refreshments, but you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
Mark your calendars for May 13th! Cheryl Rogers-Barnett will be visiting our library on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from noon until 3 p.m.  Cheryl is the adopted daughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and she will present a 1-hour program about her life that includes a short film and a Q&A session. She is the author of two books: Cowboy Princess and The All-American Cowboy Grill.  Cheryl and her husband, Larry Barnett, are co-founders of Happy Trails Forever™ - Preserving the Legacy of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. To learn more, please visit these links at www.happytrailsforever.com and www.cherylrogers.com/texas.

Castro Roofing has completed our roof and Ray Robert’s Service has installed all of our new HVAC units. The roof was over 20 years old, and some of the units were original to the building, so a change was in order. We can already tell the difference in efficiency.
For the next few months, you will see a new face around the library on Thursdays.  Owen Neace is a bilingual instructor from Yantis, with a degree from the University of Missouri, and he will be working with the Gateway to Libraries project that provides Bilingual Family Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes here at the Quitman Public Library.
So many patrons have stopped by or called to get online with OverDrive® -- our newest way to offer you the latest eBooks! If you have a library card you can check out up to 5 of the newest eBooks for 1 or 2 weeks to read on your computer, download to your smart phone, and download to your reading device such as the Nook® or Kindle®. We still need libraries, but I have to admit that this is pretty cool!

Calendar:

  • 2nd Friday Acoustical Bluegrass Jam on Friday, February 14th 6-9p.m.
  • Thursday GED classes meet from 10 – noon, Family Literacy 1 – 3 p.m., and English as a Second Language (ESL) meet from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  Both classes are taught by Sandra Grider; volunteers welcome.
  • Elizabeth Soutendijk is the director of Story Time each Friday from 11 a.m. – noon.

As always, I thank the Friends of the Library for its generous support.

Delene Allen, Library Director
