Quitman Library Connections by Delene Allen

July 19, 2017 Wood County Monitor – Quitman TX

July is National Air-Conditioning Appreciation Month.  One of the best ways to celebrate this event is to take a break at the Quitman Public Library where you can read the newspaper, enjoy a magazine, check your email, find a book on your favorite subject, or visit with friends.  July is also National Anti-boredom month and the library is showcasing some great summer reads and movies to aid in the fight against boredom.
The 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Circle is always on the second Friday of the month at the Quitman Public Library.  The next acoustical jam is Friday, August 11, 6 - 9 p.m.  Acoustic musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome.  Refreshments will be available. For more information, call 903-952-8305.
Patron cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification.  A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17.  Regular hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.  Call 903-763-4191 for more information or visit our website at www.quitmanlibrary.org.

Adult Services
GED preparatory classes are continuing throughout the summer. The class meets each Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m. and is taught by certified instructor, Susan Resnik. The class is designed to prepare students for the GED test. Call 903-763-4191 or stop by on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. to meet with the instructor. There is no cost for the class, but the GED workbook is $15.
Rebekah Yeager and Virginia Hoffpauir invite students of all ages and skill levels to bring their own supplies and join the group for free knitting and crochet instruction each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery.

Friends of the Library
Friends of the Quitman Public Library recently held its last meeting of the season and will meet again in September 2017 after Summer Break. Officers for 2017-2018 are Cathy Dye – President, Beverly Chamberlain – Vice President, Lillian Gray – Secretary, Rebekah Yeager – Treasurer, and Diane Moseley – Hospitality.
Friends is an active group of men and women dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

On Display
In the lobby showcase, during the month of July, is a selection of hand-crafted needlework items from the collections of several local crafters. Among the interesting items is an award-winning quilt designed and hand-stitched by Virginia Hoffpauir.
