Quitman Public Library welcomes the fall season by supporting community activities. This week is Fire Prevention Week, and there is a display of children’s books donated by the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department.

 

On Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m., the library will partner with Q.I.S.D. in welcoming visitors to the library’s Shamburger Community Room who are interested in learning more about bilingual programs and services offered in our community.

 

The Friends of the Library Big Fall Book Sale begins on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and will run through Friday Oct. 31. Hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., except for Friday when the sale closes at 4 p.m.



 

Stop by the library on Friday, Oct. 31from 3 – 5 p.m. as we will be giving out treats during the Quitman Chamber of Commerce Halloween Candy Walk.

 

During the Old Settlers Reunion, Oct. 29 – 31, volunteers from the Wood County TX Genealogical Society will be available in the Genealogy Department from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. to help researchers trace their Wood County ancestors.

 

The Quitman Bridge Club will host games on Thursday afternoon at the Carroll Green Civic Center during the Old Settlers Reunion. The club regularly meets at the library on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. David Worrall, an expert Bridge player and instructor, invites players of all levels to play.  



 

The public is invited to join the Wood County Metal Detecting Club on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Thurman Shamburger Community Room.

 

Knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. at the library. Students of all ages and skill levels are invited to join this growing group. Classes are free.

 

Board Games for Teens group meets every other Friday from 1 – 4 p.m. in the library’s community room. Bring board games and snacks to share. This group is organized by Homeschoolers – Wood County, Texas and is designed for teens ages 13 – 19. Call 903-763-4191 to confirm game days.

Quitman Public Library joins libraries across the country to celebrate September as Library Card Sign-up Month! Patron cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification.  A guardian must sign for children ages 5 - 17.

 
The Quitman Bridge Club will meet at the library on Wednesday, Sept. 10 for two sessions at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Bridge is the ultimate trick-taking card game and is a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. David Worrall, an expert Bridge player and instructor, will be hosting the game. Whether you are a seasoned player or just a beginner, you are invited to give it a try.  

 

Story Time with Spencer will resume in September and is scheduled for every 2nd and 4th Friday at 1 p.m. in the children’s section. Story time is designed for toddlers through six years of age, and parents need to stay with their children as the episodes are recorded. Call 903-763-4191 to confirm.

We are very excited to announce that the Quitman Public Library is a 2025 Texas Book Festival library grant recipient! With these funds, the library will update and add to our collection of bilingual books for children and the adults who read to them. The Texas Book Festival, the largest book event in Texas, is celebrating its 30th year.

 


July is National Anti-boredom Month.  With a little help from the library and a bit of motivation, this July can be boredom free by staying connected through a variety of activities. There's plenty going on at the Quitman Public Library.

Summer Reading 2025 “Adventure Begins with Summer Reading” is scheduled for the month of June at the Quitman Public Library. Young readers, aged Pre-K through 10 years, can pick up reading game cards at the library’s front desk. Each Thursday in June, from 2 – 3 p.m., there will be an activity in the library’s community room.  

Friends of the Quitman Public Library will meet at noon on May 8, 2025. This will be the last meeting of the 2025 season. The public is invited to join this active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the Quitman Public Library.

Story Time with Spencer happens every 2nd and 4th Friday at 1 p.m. in the children’s section. Spencer will read to the children on Friday, May 9, 2025. Story time is designed for toddlers through six years of age, and parents are asked to stay with their children as these story time episodes are recorded.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library meet on 2nd Thursdays at noon. The next one-hour meeting will be April 10, 2025, with the library staff providing special Spring treats. Among the topics of discussion will be the FOL Spring Book Sale planned for April 29 – May 2, 2025. The public is invited to join this active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the Quitman Public Library. 



Board Games for Teens group meet every other Wednesday from 1 – 4 p.m. in the library’s community room. Bring board games and snacks to share. This group is organized by Homeschoolers – Wood County, Texas and is designed for teens ages 13 – 19. Call 903-763-4191 to confirm game days. 


The Wood County TX Genealogical Society invites family researchers and historians to meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community Room. Wood County Metal Detecting Club, led by Jerry Tinney, meets on 1st Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at the library’s Thurman Shamburger Community Room. Exciting historical searches are being planned for this spring and summer. The public is invited. 


Knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. at the library. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join this growing group. The instruction if free, and you are encouraged to bring patterns and yarn to swap with others. 


Adult GED support services are available for students who have registered online at www.ged.com. Certified teachers are available to help with reading/writing skills and math on Wednesdays during library hours.

March is Women’s History Month, and the Quitman Public Library is celebrating with displays throughout the library honoring women like Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, and Abigail Adams. Women's History Month extends itself as a calling for all women to stand, speak, and encourage one another to reach new goals.
