In recognition of National Fire Prevention
Week 2012 (October 6th-13th), the Quitman Volunteer Fire
Department, under the direction of Chief Scott Wheeler, has donated the
following children’s books to the library: Stop Drop and Roll by Margery
Cuyler, Fire! Fire! By Gail Gibbons, and No Dragons for Tea: Fire
Safety for Kids (and Dragons) by Jean E. Pendziwol. Fire Prevention Week has its roots in the
Great Chicago Fire which occurred on October 8, 1871, leaving 100,000 people
homeless and burning more than 2000 acres in 27 hours. In 1925, President
Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week recognizing that public
education is the best means of fire prevention.
