The library is highlighting February as
National Black History Month with a media display near the check-out area. One book, Black
Texans by Marion Barnes, celebrates such notable persons as Bessie Coleman
who was born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892. Bessie
received her pilot license in 1921, two years before Amelia Earhart. By 1923,
she had purchased her first airplane and performed her first air show in
Houston, Texas.
There will be no free Federal Income Tax
assistance at the Quitman Public Library this tax season. Call the AARP help
line at 1-888-227-7669 to find the nearest free tax preparation site. Public computers
are available at the library for filing online during regular business hours,
and Wi-Fi is available 24/7.
What you may not know about the Quitman
Public Library: In 2006, the Quitman Garden Club began its Beautification
Landscaping Project for the library’s east and west patios. Members and
volunteers have spent countless hours creating and maintaining the beautiful
gardens for the enjoyment of our library and community served. Most of the
trees, plants and flowers in the gardens are native to this region. The Quitman
Garden Club meets at the library on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Knitting and crochet instruction class,
taught by Virginia Hoffpauir, meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s
main gallery. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Some of the projects
involve special causes like caps and blankets for babies, and you can help make
a difference.

Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at noon in the Shamburger Community Room. The Friends invite everyone to join them for
an hour of friendship. The short meeting will include “5-Minute No Spoiler Book
Review,” of Hotel at the Corner of Bitter
and Sweet by Jamie Ford, a short presentation of “What You May Not Know
about Me” from one of the members, and musical entertainment provided by Mike
Gilmore who will play the bagpipe in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Friends is
an active group of men and women dedicated to the growth and improvement of the
library.
Genealogy
The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will
meet at the library on Monday, March 20, 2017, at 7 p.m. An early workshop

February is Black History Month, and the Quitman Public Library is highlighting this with a selection of books and DVDs in the children’s section as well in the display case near the front check-out area. February is also for valentines, so stop by and check out our very large selection of books in regular and large print as well as romantic movies.
Friday, Feb. 10, marks the fifth anniversary of The 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam at the Quitman Public Library. Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in from 6 - 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. There will be an open mic set-up for those who wish to perform. Listeners are always welcome.
