Quitman Library Connections by Delene Allen

February 15, 2017 Wood County Monitor – Quitman TX

The library is highlighting February as National Black History Month with a media display near the check-out area.  One book, Black Texans by Marion Barnes, celebrates such notable persons as Bessie Coleman who was born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892.  Bessie received her pilot license in 1921, two years before Amelia Earhart. By 1923, she had purchased her first airplane and performed her first air show in Houston, Texas.
There will be no free Federal Income Tax assistance at the Quitman Public Library this tax season. Call the AARP help line at 1-888-227-7669 to find the nearest free tax preparation site. Public computers are available at the library for filing online during regular business hours, and Wi-Fi is available 24/7.
What you may not know about the Quitman Public Library: In 2006, the Quitman Garden Club began its Beautification Landscaping Project for the library’s east and west patios. Members and volunteers have spent countless hours creating and maintaining the beautiful gardens for the enjoyment of our library and community served. Most of the trees, plants and flowers in the gardens are native to this region. The Quitman Garden Club meets at the library on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
