To celebrate the Christmas holiday, the Quitman Public Library will be closing at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, and will be closed all day on Friday, Dec. 23, 2022

The library commemorates holiday events throughout the year and highlights each with displays of books, movies, and audiobooks. Near the checkout area is a display arranged by the QPL staff to help you plan for the upcoming new year. Stop by and check it out.

After a holiday break, the knitting and crochet instruction class will resume on Thursday, Jan.5, 2023 from 2 – 4 p.m. in the lobby. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction.

ETX Underground is all about metal detecting and historical research here in Wood and surrounding counties. If you are interested in digging in the dirt and finding stuff, then come to the club's first meeting on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library. If you have a metal detector, bring it with you.

If you need to earn a GED, now is a great time to start. Adult GED support services are available at the Quitman Public Library. The program is online, and you can register at www.ged.com. Certified instructors are available on Wednesdays beginning at noon to assist GED students with reading/writing skills and math.

The next meeting of the Friends of the Quitman Public Library will be Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 at noon in the library’s Thurman Shamburger Community Room.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library invites new members to join them for National Friends of Libraries Week. During Oct. 17 – 21, libraries across the country recognize Friends for their dedication to the growth of public libraries. For the remainder of the month, membership dues will be waived, so now is the time to join! The next meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 at noon in the library’s Thurman Shamburger Community Room.

Thankful for Libraries Connecting Texas (LCT) and E-rate Central

The Quitman Public Library – Quitman TX would not be able to sustain high-speed Internet without funding offered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that is set aside to support rural, underserved communities such as ours.

The non-competitive funding is available, and there are required forms that must be filled out correctly, and that is where the Libraries Connecting Texas (LCT) program becomes crucial to library directors such as myself.

One year, I worked through the E-rate discount application on my own. I entered an incorrect date that caused my application to be unacceptable. I thought it was a simple mistake that could be easily corrected but found myself in jeopardy of losing all funding for that year.

Fortunately, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) offered experts from E-rate Central that were able to guide me through the appeal process and get me back on the right track. I was fortunate that Peoples Communication, my Internet provider was understanding and “carried” the library through the waiting period so there was never a break in service to the patrons.

Internet connectivity is crucial to rural communities like Quitman TX. There are financially disadvantaged patrons who may not have high-speed access in their homes. In addition to the connectivity needs for online school resources, higher education opportunities, business and other informational needs, there are those who use the library’s high-speed connectivity for virtual doctor visits.

I appreciate having E-rate Central to oversee and guide me on the right path. I extend my thanks to TSLAC for seeing and understanding the need for E-rate application assistance and allowing Quitman Public Library – Quitman TX to participate in the Libraries Connecting Texas (LCT) program.

During October, the Quitman Public Library is celebrating several events and highlighting each with displays of books, movies, audiobooks, and eBooks.

National Family History Month, which is observed annually during the month of October, has grown, and evolved since its 2001 origin in Congress. The library along with the Wood County TX Genealogical Society invite family researchers, historians, and storytellers, to commemorate their family’s rich and deep history this month by allowing us to assist with beginning your genealogical tree. The society will meet on Monday, October 17, at 7 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library. Near the checkout area is a display of books arranged by the QPL Staff to highlight the American Library Association’s “Banned Books Month” each September to promote freedom to read. You may be surprised at what books have been banned through the years.

September is also National Library Card Sign-up Month, so stop in and see what your library has to offer. Patron cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5 - 17.

Photographers of all levels are invited to the “In-Focus Photography Club of East Texas” that now meets every 4^th Monday in the library’s community room. The next meeting is Monday, Sept. 26, 2022. Meet other photographers, share ideas, and participate in photography-related events. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the 6:30 p.m. meeting and workshop.

National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, and the Quitman Public Library is participating in the month-long “Register in September – Vote in November” voter registration campaign. Forms are available at the front desk.

July is National Anti-boredom Month, and the library offers plenty of summer reads and movies to keep you entertained. A new shipment of Large Print books has arrived, and these books are ready to be checked out. Visit the Summer Reads display near the front desk. Also, thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Quitman Public Library, we have added to our collection of graphic novels. Graphic novels are stories written and illustrated in the style of a comic combining illustrations with text presented in a series of rectangular panels. The stories are fun to read for all ages.

In the lobby showcase is a display celebrating HM The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebration on loan from Rebekah Yeager. Among the interesting items is a hand-knitted Queen doll.

Since 1911, our nation has recognized March as National Women’s History Month, and the Quitman Public Library is highlighting this with displays honoring many women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their public service and government leadership. March is also National Craft Month, and the library offers these TexShare® Databases: Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center, Home Improvement Reference Center, Small Engine Repair Reference Center. Call or stop by to learn more about these and many other databases.

The Quitman Public Library will not offer free Federal Income Tax assistance this year, however, printed forms are available here. You may contact the AARP Tax Aide office at (888) 227-7669 for the nearest free tax preparation site. Public computers, with no time limits, are available at the library.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Quitman Public Library, we are adding to our collection of graphic novels. Graphic novels are stories written and illustrated in the style of a comic combining illustrations with short bursts of text usually presented in a series of rectangular panels. The stories in a graphic novel unfold in a clear sequence and are fun to read. The target audience is younger readers, but adults enjoy these books as well.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library will meet on Tuesday, Apr. 12 at noon, in the Thurman Shamburger Community Room. The public is invited to join the group for one hour of light refreshments and entertainment. Friends of the Quitman Public Library is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.
