March is Women’s History Month and National Craft Month, and the Quitman Public Library is celebrating with displays near the front checkout desk as well as the Children's Department.

360° Painting of Tyler is giving the library exterior a facelift which should be completed by the end of March 2023 – weather permitting. Funding provided by The Quitman Public Library Memorial Fund, Quitman Economic Development Corporation, City of Quitman, along with a charitable donation graciously provided by Michelle Davidson, owner of 360° Painting of Tyler.

The Quitman Garden Club provides an amazing service keeping the library patios looking so beautiful! Most of the plants are native to Texas and many are starting to bloom. The club meets at 2 p.m. on the 2^nd Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at the library. Contact Jean Fox for more information (903) 763-8353.

Adult GED® exam support service is available at the Quitman Public Library. The program is online, and students can register at www.ged.com. There is a monthly subscription on that website that must be paid for by each student to access the preparatory study questions for the following separate exams: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Certified instructors are available at the library to offer assistance and guidance.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library have changed its meeting dates to 2nd Thursdays at noon. The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 13, 2023, so come and expect a tasty treat provided by Virginia Hoffpauir. On the agenda is plans for the FOL Spring Book Sale scheduled for May 2 – 5, 2023. Friends is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the Quitman Public Library.

Knitting and crochet instruction class happens each Thursday from 2 – 4 p.m. in the lobby. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join this fun group for free instruction and pattern exchange.

Whyte Dove Writers’ Group meets the 2^nd Tuesday of each month from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at the library. Consider joining this impressive group of local, published authors.

Wood County Metal Detector Club is all about metal detecting and historical research here in Wood and surrounding counties. If you are interested in digging in the dirt and finding things, join in the meeting on 1^st Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library.

The In-Focus Photography Club of East Texas meets on the last Monday of each month in the library’s community room. Join the club and network with other photographers, share ideas, and participate in photography-related contests and events. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the 6:30 p.m. meeting and workshop. 

Lost in the Woods Painters meet on 2^nd Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the following months: January, March, May, July, September and November. Call (903) 763-8353 for meeting confirmation.

In the lobby showcase this month is a collection of Agatha Christie books from the collection of Rebekah Yeager of Quitman TX. Among the interesting items is an Agatha Christie jigsaw puzzle which has 90 references to both her life and her works.

Over the next two weeks, 360° Painting of Tyler will be giving the exterior a facelift. Quitman Public Library is one of the most unique structures in Quitman Texas, and now it will be even more eye-catching! Contributions and funding by The Quitman Public Library Memorial Fund, Quitman Economic Development Corporation, City of Quitman, and Michelle Davidson, owner of 360° Painting of Tyler.

Friends of the Quitman Public Library meets 2nd Tuesdays at noon. The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 14, 2023, so come and expect a lucky treat. Friends is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the Quitman Public Library.

 The Quitman Public Library announces February as Fine Forgiveness Month for library patrons who have overdue materials to return. It doesn't matter how long you’ve had the book; the library just wants it back with no questions asked and no penalty. Don’t be like Robert Wadpole who checked out a book in the year 1667 only to have his descendants find it and return it to the Sidney Sussex College Library in 1955 – 288 years overdue!  

February is Black History Month, and the library has a display near the front check-out area that highlights this occasion. Displays of other February events are set up throughout the library featuring Valentine’s Day and romance, healthy exercising, Groundhog Day, and Celebrate a Fairy Tale Day. Don’t miss the lobby display designed this month by Rebekah Yeager. It is filled with “Vinegar Valentine” reproductions from the 1800s when it became a trend to send rude penny valentines.

February 2023 is Amnesty Month at the Quitman Public Library

 

 QUITMAN, TX — Great news if you have overdue library books! The Quitman Public Library announces February as Amnesty (or Fine Forgiveness) Month for library patrons who have materials to return.

Return the books and all overdue fines and fees will be forgiven during February. No questions asked.  

Quitman Library Director Delene Allen says, "The library staff and QPL Advisory Board would like to give everyone a chance to bring materials back to the library without penalty.”

If you lost or damaged a book or media item, you will still have to reimburse the library for that lost or damaged item.

  To celebrate the Christmas holiday, the Quitman Public Library will be closing at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, and will be closed all day on Friday, Dec. 23, 2022

  The library commemorates holiday events throughout the year and highlights each with displays of books, movies, and audiobooks. Near the checkout area is a display arranged by the QPL staff to help you plan for the upcoming new year. Stop by and check it out.

  After a holiday break, the knitting and crochet instruction class will resume on Thursday, Jan.5, 2023 from 2 – 4 p.m. in the lobby. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction.

  ETX Underground is all about metal detecting and historical research here in Wood and surrounding counties. If you are interested in digging in the dirt and finding stuff, then come to the club's first meeting on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library. If you have a metal detector, bring it with you.
