I found a mention of Quitman's first newspaper, the Quitman Clipper, from a pre-Civil War article that reads as follows:
"We are in receipt of a sprightly Bell and Everett paper called the
Quitman Clipper, published in Quitman Wood County Texas, requesting us
to exchange, which we do with pleasure. The Clipper is full of
enthusiasm and brings good news for Bell and Everett from the 'Republic'
State.

For President, John Bell of Tennessee
For Vice-President, Edward Everett of Massachusetts ----
Platform of the Constitutional Union Party,
The Constitution of the country! The Union of the States! And the Enforcement of the Laws!”
