  The Quitman Public Library building was temporarily closed on Monday, March 16, 2020 and will remain as such until mandates are lifted.

  
  Here are answers to some of your questions:

•  How long will the library be closed? The library will be closed until the most current mandate is lifted. 
•  I have materials checked out or that need renewing. What about fines? Please return your materials when they are due by leaving them in the book drop at the east entrance, or just hang on to them and consider them renewed. All overdue fines will be waived.

•  What about library programs? All library programs are suspended until further notice. Friends of the Library and QPL Story Time hope to reconvene in September. Summer Reading and Summer Lunch for Kids are subject to being postponed.

•  What about Wi-fi and e-services? Wi-fi is available 24/7 for patrons and can be best accessed from the front parking area. Call 903-763-4191 during business hours if you need the password.

•  How can I get a library card? Call the library. We can renew or, if you are a residnet of Wood County TX, we can assign you a temporary card number over the phone.

•  How can I read the next bestseller? Although physical materials cannot be checked out right now, there are alternatives. Now may be the perfect time to explore digital materials if you have a computer, tablet, phone or reading device using OverDrive, Libby, and TexShare Databases. Call the library if you need help.

•  What if I have an urgent need for copies, faxing, printing, legal or tax forms? Call the library during business hours 903-763-4191 and we will do our best to help you.

•  Is the library staff okay? Yes, we are doing just fine! The staff will be busy cleaning and disinfecting the entire building and books. We also have other projects and renovations we are working on as well.

  Quitman Public Library staff and volunteers would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year 2019! The library will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 for New Year’s Day.

  This month, the library will highlight the new year with a display of self-help books selected by Melissa Frosch and Jessica King. Look for the “New Beginning” display near the front checkout desk.

  If you got a new guitar for Christmas, bring it on out to the 2^nd Friday Acoustic Jam at the Quitman Public Library on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019 from 6 – 9 p.m. Musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in with acoustical instruments only. Beginners are welcome to come early to workshop at 5 p.m. Listeners are always welcome at this free event. Contact Eugene Allen at 903-975-5745.

  Patron cards are available for those who provide photo identification and proof of residence in Wood County. A guardian must sign for children ages 5 - 17.  Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Keep current at www.facebook.com/quitmanpubliclibrary and visit the library’s website at www.quitmanlibrary.org. Adult Services

  Knitting and Crochet class will resume on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019. Rebekah Yeager and Virginia Hoffpauir invite students of all ages and skill levels to bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery.

  Adult GED support services will resume on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019. Assistance from a State certified instructor is offered each Thursday, 4 – 6 p.m. in the library’s public computer area.

Children’s Services

  Story Time meets each Wednesday at 2 p.m.  Lillian Gray plans an educational hour filled with stories, crafts and plenty of fun. Upcoming events: Jan. 2 – Snow Globes; Jan. 9 – Who Sleeps During the Winter?; Jan. 16 – It’s Wet and Cold!; Jan. 23 – Snowman – What’s His Story?; Jan. 30 – Fun Day with Hot Cocoa and a Movie!

  Story Time is designed for young readers and home-schooled students, but anyone who wants to hear a great story is welcome. Call 903-763-BOOK (2665).

Friends of the Library

  The Friends of the Quitman Public Library invites everyone to its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019 at noon in the Thurman Shamburger Community Room. The Friends is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

Genealogy

  Begin the New Year with a new career! The Quitman Public Library will host a hiring event on Thursday, Jan. 4 from 1 - 4 p.m. sponsored by Express Employment Professionals of Tyler. For more information, contact Vicky Walton at 903-592-9999.

  January is National “Get Organized” Month, and the library has a media display filled with ideas to help you clear, or at least control, the clutter for the New Year. If your resolution is to exercise, diet, or just be a better person, this is the place to find the information and books you need to be successful. 

  The next 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam is Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, in the library’s community room. Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to this informal jam from 6 – 9 p.m. An open mic is set up for those who wish to perform. Light refreshments are available and listeners are always welcome. Call 903-975-5745 for more information.

  The library appreciates those businesses in our community who offer routine services at reduced or no charge throughout the year in support of our local library.   The Friends of the Library will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at noon. A special audio-video presentation will be “A Look Back at 2017” arranged by QPL staff.

  The Friends are selling their brand new 95-page cookbook, “Tried and True Recipes from the Friends of the Quitman Public Library.” The books are available at the front check-out desk for $10 each. The Friends of the Quitman Public Library is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

Library Notes by Delene Allen - Wood County Democrat, Quitman TX

The Quitman Public Library is participating with the Greater Quitman Area Chamber of Commerce on October 31^st to present “A Haunting in Hogg Park” from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Activities will be concentrated around the Stinson House, and a schedule of events will be posted near its front gate.  There will be three contests for best costume, loudest scream, and best pre-carved/decorated pumpkin.  Award-winning storyteller, Dru Woods, will share spine-chilling stories around the campfire every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Trail of Terror is back this year, for $1 per person.  For those too young for the trail, there will be a fortune teller for tots and a timed Coin-Search-in-the-Haystack booth. Vendor booths will be serving drinks, hot dogs, chips and brownies, along with loads of candy with lots of tricks and treats. For more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 903-763-4411.  

October is National Popcorn Month, so stop by and check out a movie from the Quitman Public Library.  Our DVD collection is growing, and patrons may check out up to four movies to keep for one week.

Friday Night Bluegrass Jam Fever is always on the second Friday of the month in the library’s community room.  The next acoustical jam is Friday, November 8th, 6 - 9 p.m.  Come early to tune up.  Acoustic musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome.  Refreshments will be available. Adult Services

Class is in session each Thursday for GED preparation from 10 a.m. – noon and English as a Second Language (ESL) from 4 – 6 p.m. in the library’s conference room.  These classes run concurrently with the Q.I.S.D. holiday schedule.  ESL and GED classes are taught by certified instructor, Sandra Grider. To sign up for either class, just stop by during class hours.

Knitting and crochet instructor Virginia Hoffpauir invites everyone to bring their own supplies and join her group for a fun time of free instruction.  Stop by the library’s main gallery each Thursday, 2 – 4 p.m. to join the session. All levels welcome. 

Young Adult and Children’s Services

Join us for Story Time at the Quitman Public Library, 202 East Goode Street, Quitman TX each Friday from 11 a.m. - noon for an hour of story time activities. The program is designed for young readers and home-schooled students, however anyone who wants to hear a great story is welcome.

Elizabeth Soutendijk, who works with Gateway to Libraries - Reading Literacy, has designed a wonderful thematic program that teaches as well as entertains. For more information, call 903-763-BOOK.

Friends of the Library

            The Friends of the Library invite the public to hear local author, Larry Black, on November 12^th at noon in the library’s Shamburger Community Room.  Larry Black will be discussing his latest novel and the writing process from start to finish.  Refreshments will be available, but you are always welcome to bring your lunch and spend your lunch hour among Friends.

Friends of the Library is a lively group of men and women dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.  

                                                                                                            

Genealogy

             The Wood County Genealogical Society recently celebrated its 30^th anniversary and celebrated October 2013 as "Family History Month."  Whether you're new to family history research or have devoted a lifetime to it, the Quitman Public Library has the resources you need.  We offer on-site access to NewspaperArchive, Ancestry, HeritageQuest and AncientFaces at no charge to patrons, and we are a designated LDS FamilySearch center.
