The Quitman Public Library will be closed Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28, 2014, to celebrate Thanksgiving.  However, TexShare® Databases and OverDrive® services as well as Wi-Fi are available 24/7.

At the front desk is a holiday collection of books for pleasure reading, movies with a holiday theme, and books with recipe and decorating ideas to make Christmas extra special.  Stop by and check out what your library has to offer.

GED® or General Educational Development preparatory class will not meet this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  The class is normally held at the Quitman Public Library each Thursday from 4:30 – 6 p.m. and is taught by a certified instructor.  Students are taught independently according to a individually designed study plan, and all materials are free.  Sign up at the library’s front desk, or call 903-589-6900 for more information.

The Library Advisory Board will hold its next meeting on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 6 p.m. The public is always welcome.

Story Time Hour is each Wednesday 2 - 3 p.m. and runs concurrently with the QISD calendar. Nichole Bradberry, Lillian Gray, Jessica King and Elizabeth Soutendijk have planned a fun hour of thematic stories, crafts, and entertainment. Friends of the Quitman Public Library will meet Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at noon in the Shamburger Community Room.  The Friends invite the public to join in the Christmas Spirt as the Quitman Elementary Choir, under the direction of Katrina Morrow, perform a holiday presentation.  Refreshments will be served.

The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will meet on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community Room. The Friends of the Quitman Public Library Annual Fall Book and Bake Sale will take place Thursday November 6, through Saturday, November 8, 2014, beginning at 10 a.m. The sale ends Saturday at 2 p.m. 

November is National Native American Heritage Month, and the Quitman Public Library is recognizing this event with a display of media available for check out.  Also, there is a holiday collection of books for pleasure reading, movies with a holiday theme, and books with recipe and decorating ideas to make Thanksgiving extra special. These displays are located near the check-out desk.

Special thanks go to Ulna McWhorter and family for donating at Kimball console piano for the Thurman Shamburger Community Room.  Also, the Wood County TX Genealogical Society recently awarded a lifetime membership to me, Delene Allen, and I consider this a great honor.

July is National Air-Conditioning Appreciation Month.  One of the best ways to celebrate this event is to take a break at the Quitman Public Library where you can read the newspaper, enjoy a magazine, check your email, find a book on your favorite subject, or visit with friends. 

The 2^nd Friday Acoustical Music Circle is always on the second Friday of the month at the Quitman Public Library.  The next acoustical jam is Friday, August 8, 6 - 9 p.m.  Acoustic musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome.  Refreshments will be available. Attention Summer Readers: Groovy Science! at Gov. Jim Hogg Park this Wednesday, June 11, 2014 from 2 - 4 p.m.!! Theda Andrews and volunteers from Quitman's Forever Young will show us how to make our own lava lamps! Disco music provided by Groovetown D.J., and we're hoping for a special guest who will show us how folks busted a move back in the 1970s. Snacks are courtesy of Forever Young - Quitman.

On Wednesday, June 4, 2014, Cedric Haynes, Meteorologist from KLTV-Channel 7, will present a fun program about clouds to kick off this year’s Summer Reading 2014 program. Each summer reader will have a chance to make a 3-D cloud to take home. We will be reading, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” by Judi Barrett. Popcorn and a movie will follow for those who wish to stay. This year’s Texas Summer Reading theme is “Fizz…Boom… READ!” It is a program designed to integrate science and reading with “hands-on” projects for our youngest patrons. Activities are planned for each Wednesday in June, 2 – 4 p.m. and can be found at www.quitmanlibrary.org. Stop by the library soon to register and pick up your Summer Reading game card!

Ol’ Raccoon, a life-sized story-telling raccoon will be reading to our youngest readers Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community Room. Elizabeth Soutendijk has a planned a fun hour of stories, crafts, and entertainment. Call 903-763-4191 for more information.

Library Notes to run April 16. 2014

OverDrive Read is a new way of reading eBooks, and it is now available for patrons of the Quitman Public Library as part of the Northeast Texas Library Consortium. What that means is you can check out and read the latest eBooks for up to 2 weeks without the need for downloads or special software on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. All you need to borrow digital titles is an Internet connection and a library card.

If you’re using a tablet or smartphone, you may want to download OverDrive’s free mobile app to easily find and save the library’s OverDrive website and to download and enjoy borrowed titles on these popular devices and platforms: Android™, BlackBerry®, iOS (iPhone®/iPad®/iPod® touch), Windows® Phone, Kindle® Fire tablets, KoboTM tablets, and NOOK® tablets.

            Available at the front desk and on our website are short handouts that outline basic steps for borrowing and enjoying digital titles from your library, as well as specific steps for getting started.

GED preparatory classes are available from 10 – noon to help you prepare for the GED test.  English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are also offered on Thursdays from 4 – 6 p.m. in the library’s conference room.  These classes run concurrently with the Q.I.S.D. holiday schedule.  ESL and GED classes are taught by certified instructor, Sandra Grider.
