  Banned Books Week (Sep. 27 – Oct. 3, 2020) is a national, annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It spotlights current and historical attempts at censorship, and the goal is to keep material publicly available so people can make their own choices of what to read. The Quitman Public Library has set up a display of books that have been challenged over the years, and some titles may surprise you. “A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemmingway, “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, and “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison are a few examples.

  Each Wednesday at 2 p.m. is QPL Story Time. It is a fun-filled hour of reading, learning, crafts, games, and special treats. The program is designed for young readers up to 12 years of age. Activities are designed with social distancing guidelines in mind. Special thanks to Peoples - Quitman for sponsoring QPL Story Time crafts.

  Friends of the Library invites new members to join this active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library. Friends meet for one hour at noon on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss book reviews, fundraisers, library programming and activities. Light refreshments are available, but it is okay to bring your own lunch. Officers for FY21 are Jackie Gilbreath – president, Carley Tucker – vice-president, Rebekah Yeager – secretary, Tonia Nix – treasurer.

  Knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the Shamburger Community Room. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction. Bring your patterns to swap with others.

During this month, the American Library Association unites with libraries in a national effort to ensure every child can sign up for their own library card.   A big “Thank you!” to local sponsors, City National Bank – Quitman and Wood County National Bank, for supporting this year’s Youth Financial Literacy Money Camp at the Quitman Public Library! Gateway to American Libraries presented certificates and awards to over twenty of the library’s youngest readers.

  Summer reading programs may be over, but the library has many new e-books aimed for elementary-aged children that are available online by visiting the library’s home page. These virtual books are narrated in several different languages.

  The Quitman Public Library will be closed Friday, July 3, 2020 in observance of Independence Day.  Wi-fi will be available in the parking lot area for patrons.

  July 2020 is GAO Youth Financial Literacy money camp at the Quitman Public Library! This year’s local sponsors are City National Bank – Quitman and Wood County National Bank.   The 2020 Summer Reading “Imagine Your Story” program is over, and all of the participants were awarded prizes sponsored by Sonic – Quitman and the Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis.

  Displayed near the front check out desk is a collection of great summer reads and movies selected by the QPL staff. Also, we have added several new Large Print novels to the collection by patron request. Stop by and check things out!   The Quitman Public Library is open and providing public service in accordance with current State guidelines. Social distancing and wearing protective masks are strongly encouraged. All patron areas are regularly disinfected with industrial grade sanitizer.  

  Many library programs are slowly and carefully returning, but State mandated maximum capacity guidelines are being enforced. Our children’s program coordinator has announced that the 2020 Summer Reading program is still planned for June, but activities have been modified for outdoors at Gov. Jim Hogg City Park. A schedule will be announced soon.
