Quitman Library Connections by Delene Allen

Wood County Monitor – Quitman TX

Thursday, September 24, 2020

Banned Books Week (Sep. 27 – Oct. 3, 2020) is a national, annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It spotlights current and historical attempts at censorship, and the goal is to keep material publicly available so people can make their own choices of what to read. The Quitman Public Library has set up a display of books that have been challenged over the years, and some titles may surprise you. “A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemmingway, “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, and “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison are a few examples.

Learn more about OverDrive® and how you can connect to a vast collection of eBooks, audio books and streaming video by visiting the website at www.quitmanlibrary.org. Also, check out the online TexShare Database that is loaded with invaluable and up-to-the-minute research tools and reference resources.

Library cards are available for those who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification.  A guardian must sign for children ages 5 - 17.

Each Wednesday at 2 p.m. is QPL Story Time. It is a fun-filled hour of reading, learning, crafts, games, and special treats. The program is designed for young readers up to 12 years of age. Activities are designed with social distancing guidelines in mind. Special thanks to Peoples - Quitman for sponsoring QPL Story Time crafts.

Friends of the Library invites new members to join this active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library. Friends meet for one hour at noon on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss book reviews, fundraisers, library programming and activities. Light refreshments are available, but it is okay to bring your own lunch. Officers for FY21 are Jackie Gilbreath – president, Carley Tucker – vice-president, Rebekah Yeager – secretary, Tonia Nix – treasurer.

Knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the Shamburger Community Room. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group for free instruction. Bring your patterns to swap with others.

The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will meet each 3rd Monday at 7 p.m. in the library’s Thurman Shamburger Community Room. Contact David Gilbreath at 972-977-7988 for details and follow the society’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/woocotx.

The Quitman Public Library is operating in accordance with current State guidelines with regular hours of Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.  Visitors are encouraged to wear protective masks and allow others plenty of personal space. All patron areas are regularly disinfected with industrial grade sanitizer.  Contact the library by phone at 903-763-4191, fax 903-763-2532, text 903-952-8305 or by email at quitmanlibrarian@gmail.com.
