The 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam at the Quitman Public Library is Friday, April 12, 2019. Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in from 6 - 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. There will be an open mic set-up for those who wish to perform. Listeners are always welcome.

What you may not know about the Quitman Public Library: Notary service is usually available during regular business hours, but to guarantee an appointment, call 903-763-4191.

Patron cards are for Wood County residents with photo identification. A guardian must sign for children ages 5-17. A representative from Workforce Solutions of East Texas is at the Quitman Public Library each 1^st Friday from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. to assist job seekers. The next workshop is Friday, May 3, 2019. No appointment is necessary.

Children’s Services

Story Time, designed for young readers and home-schooled students, meets each Wednesday at 2 p.m. Terri Bennett plans an educational hour filled with stories, crafts and plenty of fun. Upcoming events: – Apr. 17 “Meet Our Local Heroes” – Apr. 24 “It’s Okay to be Mad” – May 1 “Monkey Around” Peoples Telephone is sponsor of this year’s crafts and activities.

Friends of the Library

Friends of the Quitman Public Library meet Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at noon in the Shamburger Community Room. The public is invited to join the Friends for a potluck dinner to mark the last meeting of the season. After a summer break, the group will reconvene in September.

Workforce Solutions of East Texas will conduct a Hiring Fair on Friday, Apr. 5, 2019 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Shamburger Community Room of the Quitman Public Library. Several caregiver positions are open starting at $9 per hour.

Each year the month of April is set aside as National Poetry Month, inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, and the Quitman Public Library is highlighting this event with a display near the front check-out area. Because poetic fragments have been found on monoliths and rune stones, historians believe that poetry originated from people reciting or singing to remember things – like we still do today.

The 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam at the Quitman Public Library is Friday, April 12, 2019. Last month, Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and performer Jo-EL Sonnier stopped in to join the jammers. Acoustical musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in from 6 - 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. There will be an open mic set-up for those who wish to perform. Listeners are always welcome.

What you may not know about the Quitman Public Library: TexShare Databases are licensed e-resources that are available 24/7 for Texas library patrons. Within the TexShare database, you can find the most up-to-date online resources for homework help, health or business information, academic journals, popular magazines, genealogy, or job and career development. Meet the Author on Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2019 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Linda Brendle, author of Tatia's Tattoo and A Long and Winding Road: A Caregiver's Tale of Life, Love, and Chaos, will be meeting the public and signing books.

There will be no free Federal Income Tax assistance at the Quitman Public Library this tax season, however, printed Forms 1040, 1040 A, and 1040 EZ are available here. The AARP Tax Aide office at 1-888-227-7669 for the nearest free tax preparation site. Public computers, with no time limits, are available at the library for patrons to file online during regular business hours. Public Wi-Fi is available 24/7.
