The library will be closed for New Year’s Day on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, and will return to regular business hours on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026.

 

A new year is a great time to begin earning a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. GED refers to a series of tests that certify a person has achieved a high school level of academic knowledge and skills, and it serves as an alternative to a traditional high school diploma. Free GED tutoring is available at the library each Wednesday, 4 - 6 p.m. It is taught by a degreed and professionally trained tutor who specializes in math and essay writing. Due to the unexpected closure of Baker & Taylor, access to the Boundless® eBook app is no longer available. For many of the same books, and more, enjoy Quitman Public Library’s eBook platform, Libby®, powered by OverDrive and the Northeast Texas Digital Consortium. QPL Knitting & Crochet Class will return to regular meetings on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026. The class regularly meets each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. at the library. Students of all ages and skill levels are invited to join this growing group. Classes are free.

 

The next meeting of the Friends of the Library will be Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026, at noon. The Friends now meet quarterly in the library’s Shamburger Community Room on the 2nd Thursday of February, May, September, and December.

 

Whyte Dove Writers Group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at the library. You are welcome to join this group of regional authors, editors, and aspiring writers who meet to discuss, review and share techniques. This workshop is open to the public.

 

Wood County Metal Detector Club, led by Jerry Tinney, meets on 1st Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library. The public is invited.

 

The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will return to regular meetings in January. The society meets on 3rd Mondays at 5:30 p.m. in the library’s Shamburger Community Room.

 

Board Games for Teens group meets every other Friday from 1 – 4 p.m. in the library’s community room. Bring board games and snacks to share. This group is organized by Homeschoolers – Wood County, Texas and is designed for teens ages 13 – 19. Call 903-763-4191 to confirm game days.

The library will close on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, at noon for the Christmas holidays, and normal business hours will resume on Tuesday, Dec. 30. The library will close at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 31 for New Year's Eve, and will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day. After that, we will return to regular hours.

There is a lot going on at the library during the final two weeks of October 2025! Don’t miss the Friends of the Library Big Fall Book Sale that begins on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and runs through Friday Oct. 31. Hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., except for Friday when the sale closes at 4 p.m.

 

The Wood County TX Genealogical Society will hold its regular meeting Monday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. Instead of meeting at the library, the society will meet at the Quitman City Cemetery where Ron Schell will present “How to Clean Cemetery Gravestones.” Bring your lawn chair, bug spray and some water.

 

Medicare 101 will be presented by Andy Laudenslager beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 23 in the Thurman Shamburger Community Room. There is no cost, and no appointment is needed for this free information.

 

Stop by the library on Friday, Oct. 31from 3 – 5 p.m. as we will be giving out treats during the Quitman Chamber of Commerce Halloween Candy Walk.

 

During the Old Settler’s Reunion, Oct. 29 – 31, volunteers from the Wood County TX Genealogical Society will be available in the Genealogy Department from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. to help researchers trace their Wood County ancestors.

Quitman Public Library welcomes the fall season by supporting community activities. This week is Fire Prevention Week, and there is a display of children’s books donated by the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department.

 

On Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m., the library will partner with Q.I.S.D. in welcoming visitors to the library’s Shamburger Community Room who are interested in learning more about bilingual programs and services offered in our community.

 

The Friends of the Library Big Fall Book Sale begins on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and will run through Friday Oct. 31. Hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., except for Friday when the sale closes at 4 p.m.

Quitman Public Library joins libraries across the country to celebrate September as Library Card Sign-up Month! Patron cards are available for those residents who can provide proof of residence in Wood County and photo identification.  A guardian must sign for children ages 5 - 17.

 
The Quitman Bridge Club will meet at the library on Wednesday, Sept. 10 for two sessions at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Bridge is the ultimate trick-taking card game and is a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. David Worrall, an expert Bridge player and instructor, will be hosting the game. Whether you are a seasoned player or just a beginner, you are invited to give it a try.  

 

Story Time with Spencer will resume in September and is scheduled for every 2nd and 4th Friday at 1 p.m. in the children’s section. Story time is designed for toddlers through six years of age, and parents need to stay with their children as the episodes are recorded. Call 903-763-4191 to confirm.
