Summer Reading 2016!! Get Ready...Get Set...READ! ON Thursday, June 23, get ready to GET SOAKED! At 2 p.m., the library crew will be at Gov. Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman TX and we've got some exciting outdoor fun planned! For the older children, we will have water balloon toss, 3-legged sack races, dodge ball"oon" and other games. For the younger ones, we will have sidewalk chalk art and craft stations.  Dress in swimwear and shoes for relay racing, and bring a towel. For more information, call 903-763 BOOK (2665).

June 2016 is Summer Reading 2016 “On Your Mark, Get Set …READ!” at the Quitman Public Library! Young readers are encouraged to stop in to register and pick up their reading game cards at the library’s front desk. Each Thursday in June, from 2 – 4 p.m., there will be an activity.  This Thursday, June 9^th, the theme is “Blue Blazes!” Come see Dance Dimensions and the Blue Blazes Jump Rope Team from Mineola TX perform for us at the Carroll Green Civic Center, 602 McAlister Street, Quitman TX. If you have a jump rope, bring it and join in! Special thanks to Bobby Gray, owner of Hog Computer and Jay and Jan Gorman, owners of the Texas Tea Room for sponsoring this event and donating jump ropes so everyone can get jumping!

The 2^nd Friday Acoustical Music Jam is always on the second Friday of the month at the Quitman Public Library.  The next acoustical jam is Friday, June 10, from 6 - 9 p.m.  Acoustic musicians of all ages and musical levels are invited to join in, and listeners are always welcome.  Refreshments will be available. We’ll also be playing washers, horseshoes and other lawn games. We may have to move it indoors, so call the library at 903-763-4191 for updates in case the weather is bad.

The public is invited to the Friends of the Quitman Public Library regular meeting on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at noon, to meet author Mary Gail Reed, one of three authors who write as Helen Foster Reed. Gail will be discussing their latest book, A Flock of Sparrows, a novel about five Texas widows, the storm of the century, and the strength of faith and friendship. There will be a covered dish lunch to celebrate the Friends last meeting of the season, so bring a dish and enjoy the fellowship.

The Friends invite everyone to a Potluck Dinner at noon on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, for a special hour of community fellowship at the Quitman Public Library!  Guest speakers will be authors Gail Reed and Helen Myers who make up two-thirds of the writing trio who write under the pen name of Helen Foster Reed. Their partner Madeleine Foster is unable to attend. They will be discussing their current book, A Flock of Sparrows.               

This will be the last meeting of the season, and after a summer break, the Friends will meet again on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. The Friends of the Quitman Public Library is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

Among the interesting items are boots, medals, dog tags and a model of a 187^th Assault Helicopter.
