Summer Reading at the Quitman Public Library - July 2016

Summer Reading 2016 “On Your Mark, Get Set …READ!” begins this month at the Quitman Public Library! Young readers are encouraged to stop in to register and pick up their reading game cards at the library’s front desk. Each Thursday in June, from 2 – 4 p.m., there will be an activity.  This Thursday, June 2nd, the theme is “Good Ol’ Times.” so join us at Gov. Jim Hogg City Park for some old time games like Simon Says, Red Rover, Mother May I?, Tug of War, and Heads Up 7up. We’ll also be playing washers, jacks, and marbles.

It’s Mystery Month at the Quitman Public Library, and the line-up of books on display is looking criminally good. Stop by and check out what is new in adult, young adult and audio mysteries. Log in using your library card number, and your password is the telephone number we have on file for your account (include dashes).  Search our online catalog for books, see if they are in, and place your hold.  You may track items you have checked out and renew them yourself.  To avoid overdues, there is a notification option where you can set reminders. 

The next 2^nd Friday Acoustical Jam Circle is Friday, May 13, 2016. All skill levels and ages are welcome. Everyone is invited to stop by and play or just listen to some great acoustical music. This month, we’re hoping to have a special guest jammer from The Texas Smoke Band.

General Educational Development GED® preparatory class, taught by Virginia Haney, will hold its last class for the year on Thursday, May 19^th, 2016 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library. There is no charge for GED classes, so stop by and Virginia will be happy to tell you more about the program and what to expect for classes this fall.

Free knitting and crochet instruction is offered each Thursday 2 – 4 p.m. in the library’s main gallery and is taught by Virginia Hoffpauir. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and join the group.

Join the Story Time Gang on on Thursday, May 12,  2016 from 2 – 3 p.m. to learn about this week’s theme: Transportation. We will talk about racing and NASCAR, read “Ride Flyboy” and “On the Move,” sing “The Wheels on the Bus,” and play a matching game.

The public is invited to the Friends of the Quitman Public Library regular meeting on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at noon, to meet author Mary Gail Reed, one of three authors who write as Helen Foster Reed. Gail will be discussing their latest book, A Flock of Sparrows, a novel about five Texas widows, the storm of the century, and the strength of faith and friendship. There will be a covered dish lunch to celebrate the Friends last meeting of the season, so bring a dish and enjoy the fellowship.

Their partner Madeleine Foster is unable to attend. They will be discussing their current book, A Flock of Sparrows.               

This will be the last meeting of the season, and after a summer break, the Friends will meet again on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. The Friends of the Quitman Public Library is an active group of volunteers dedicated to the growth and improvement of the library.

Near the library’s checkout desk is a media display to honor many women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their public service and government leadership. March is also National Craft Month, so for hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers, the library now offers these TexShare® Databases: Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center, Home Improvement Reference Center, Small Engine Repair Reference Center. Call or stop by to learn more about these and many other databases.

Special thanks extend to Kay Robinson for her donation of a Time magazine subscription, and to Ken and Margo Massat for donating a one-year subscription to the Citizen magazine.

The next 2nd Friday Acoustical Music Circle is March 11, 2016 from 6 - 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. Occasionally, members from the following regional bands drop by to jam with the locals: The Coleman Brothers, Denim Grass, The Backroad Band, Highway 852, The Hubbard Family and The Massat Family. January is “Get Healthy, Stay Healthy” month.  If you have decided to exercise more, diet, or just be a better person this year, the library has the information and books you need to be successful.  This special display is located near the check-out area and includes the Bottom Line’s Health Breakthroughs for 2016.

January is National “Art Appreciation Month,” and what better way to appreciate art than to sharpen your own artistic skills? Art classes for all ages are held weekly at the Quitman Public Library and cover an array of media including pencil drawing, charcoal, ink and watercolor. Youth classes for children twelve and under will be held on Wednesdays from 5 – 6 p.m. Adult classes will be held on Thursdays from 5 – 6 p.m. Classes are $4 for youth and $8 for adults.
